Why do you need to provide Data Protection and GDPR training for your employees?
If your business collects data about individuals, that could be used to identify them, then you need to comply with General Data Protection Regulations or GDPR. So the simple answer to why you should provide GDPR training for your employees is that anyone in your business who has access to, or uses that data in some way, will need GDPR training to understand the regulations and ensure that they do not fall foul of the law.
Failing to manage and secure the data you hold in an appropriate way opens you to considerable risk, and specifically if you are found in breach of GDPR you could be liable for a fine of 20 million euro or up to 4% of the annual worldwide turnover of your business, whichever is the higher.
GDPR training is not the only component of GDPR compliance but it plays an integral role by ensuring your team understand the importance of managing and processing data properly and as well as how to do it. Without data protection training, any measures you put in place, such as cyber-security systems or privacy policies, will be undermined.
GDPR training takes you through the fundamentals of the data protection regulations and lays out what you need to understand in relation to the data you hold, including:
- How to process data in a fair, lawful and transparent way.
- What you are using the data for.
- How long you can keep the data.
- How you keep the data accurate and up to date.
- How you keep data secure and confidential.
The training will also take you through the rights individuals have regarding the data you hold about them e.g. the right to be informed about how their data is being used, the right of access to their data and the right to be forgotten. Being aware of these rights and managing the data in such as a way as to be able to deal with any requests in relation to the data is vital.
As part of your GDPR compliance, you may need to appoint a Data Protection Officer (depending on the size of your business and the volume and complexity of the data you hold) and this person will require in-depth GDPR training on the regulations in order to be the main point of authority. Everyone else in your organisation will require sufficient level of data protection training so as to be aware of the risks and their responsibilities.
